Nissan’s tuning arm NISMO is to introduce an ECU and transmission upgrade for the GT-R supercar.
According to the company the ECU chip increases maximum boost pressure by 0.1 bar (1.5 PSI) to improve low end torque, while the new Transmission Control Module produces quicker downshifts and increases the electronically controlled speed limiter to 200mph.
However, the new tuning parts will initially only be available to Japanese customers who will, rather curiously, have to rent the parts from NISMO.
The initial cost of the upgrade is 294,000 Yen (£2,000) but that will only rent you the two units for 24 months, after which you’ll have to pay an additional £220 per year to keep the upgrades. Nissan will also continue to honour the GT-R's warranty on NISMO chipped vehicles.
Early adopters of the GT-R will also be able to upgrade their ‘old’ cars with a new series of performance parts direct from Nissan.
Owners of the Series I GT-R will be able to add new parts to up-rate their Godzilla supercar. Among the available parts will be revised Bilstein shock absorbers, new front and rear springs, and new transmission and engine mounts.
Some Spec V model parts will also be made available, including the lightweight Ray 20-inch alloy wheels that reportedly helped shave as much as three seconds from the GT-R’s Nürburgring lap time.
