BlueSport is coming, but no Porsche version
A production version of the VW BlueSport is looking increasingly likely – especially in light of the fact that the project now has been given an official VW codename – but Porsche has denied that it will build its own version as an entry-level model.
Rumours have been circulating for a while that Porsche is looking at building a successor to the VW-powered mid-engined 914, and the BlueSport shown earlier this year as a show concept at Detroit and Geneva had been looking like a likely candidate as a base for a four-cylinder entry-level Porsche.
VW needs more than one brand to make use of the car’s basic architecture, however, and a SEAT or Audi version is currently favourite to help create the economies of scale that would make the £20k roadster cost effective.
Don’t expect badge-engineered clones, though; the BlueSport has been designed as a modular platform that allows for unique bodies, varying wheelbases and even different track widths.
A production version of the BlueSport could still appear with a Porsche badge, however, but as a bespoke-bodied VW with a ‘by Porsche Design’ label. Quite how that idea differs from a full-blown Porsche model, we’re not sure.
