A1 GP at Brands Hatch last season
The future of the A1 Grand Prix series is in doubt barely a week after the series announced the details of the calendar for its fifth season, which is due to run this autumn.
The Daily Telegraph has reported that the British-based operator for the series – A1 Grand Prix Operations Limited – is poised to call in the administrators. A spokesman told the paper: "Like many other companies in today's difficult economic environment, we had cashflow problems and we haven't been able to pay [the suppliers]."
If A1 Grand Prix Operations Limited goes under, the self-styled ‘world cup of motorsport’ could be on seriously rocky ground, despite support from Ferrari, which builds the cars for the series.
The A1 GP championship is still planning an ambitious 12 rounds for 2009-2010, despite the fact that four of its 11 events last season were either canned or failed to materialise.
With rounds in Mugello, Mexico and Indonesia cancelled, and a ‘TBC’ event that never came to fruition, the 2008-2009 season was reduced to seven events – and of those the New Zealand event reportedly only happened because Team New Zealand seat holder Colin Giltrap stumped up the cash to fly the cars and equipment to NZ.
