R8 convertible may be V10 only
This grainy camera phone image is the best proof yet that a soft-top version of the Audi R8 is on the way.
It shows an undisguised R8 convertible and reveals that the fabric-hooded drop-top keeps the majority of the lines of its coupe sibling, although it loses the distinctive aluminium side 'blades'. It has been leaked onto the internet by Stafford Audi dealership, which had posted a classified ad (now removed, presumably at the behest of Audi high-ups) to say that it is taking deposits for the new soft-top supercar.
Although the looks remain similar to those of the coupe, the chassis is expected to be strengthened to cope with the loss of the roof, while extra intakes and a pair of roll-over bars will be fitted behind the seats.
Stafford Audi puts the price at an estimated £105k, but says that the only engine option will be the range-topping 5.2-litre V10. The ad also suggests that the car will be revealed in public for the first time at the Geneva motor show next March.
Spy image shows fabric roof
Despite the PH classified ad, and the rumours and spy images that have been flying around the web for some time suggesting the car could hit UK showrooms in 2011, Audi will not officially confirm the existence of the car.
Still, with evidence of such a polished prototype, and with dealers clearly keen to take deposits, we reckon it's a reasonable bet that an R8 convertible is headed for production.
