Would a Ferrari-engined Viper be a Serpente?
Rumours currently doing the rounds in the US suggest that future Vipers could get Ferrari power.
Despite recent suggestions that Fiat were keen to put the Viper brand to the axe - seeing it as a potential rival to Ferrari - US magazine Car and Driver has suggested that Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne is considering creating a V10 version of Ferrari's next-generation V8 for the American muscle car.
The move could help to reingvigorate the flagging Viper brand, potentially turning the marquee into a proper Chrysler 'halo' brand. It would also be a sensible economy of scale for Fiat, as it would be able to extend the new engine's production costs across three brands - Ferrari, Maserati and Viper.
But although the basic design of the engines would be the same, the Viper would still be likely to be pushrod operated, while the Ferrari would get a flat-plane crank.
Don't expect to see a Ferrari-engined Viper too soon, however - any new shared engine tech is still several years off.
