Aston's 'Ring victory -50 years in the making
Aston Martin celebrated a spectacular clean sweep at the Nurburgring 1000km race at the weekend, as its DBR1-2 sports cars filled the top three places.
The cars that fought so valiantly against the turbodiesel Peugeots and Audis at this year's Le Mans - their yowling V12s upholding the honour of the petrol-engined cars - dominated the 195-lap race.
It was a fitting way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sir Stirling Moss's victory in the 1959 Nurburgring 1000km. Sir Stirling won the event on the way to clinching the World Sportscar Championship behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DBR1, the spiritual forebear of Aston's latest racer.
What do you mean there's a car behind me?
Sir Stirling will be celebrating another significant milestone this year. He turns 80 just before the Goodwood Revival and, to celebrate, Goodwood is gathering together 80 of the 96 cars he is known to have raced.
Topping off the celebration will be a no doubt heart-warming rendition of 'Happy Birthday', with the 120,000 or so expected spectators invited to join in. Only for a national motor racing treasure...
Britain's best-know motoring legend will also be reunited with his DBR1 racer from 1959, although Goodwood won't yet reveal what other cars from Moss's illustrious career will make an appearance.
Sir Stirling's birthday bash (also known as the 2009 Goodwood Revival) takes place from 18-20 September.
