New Saab makes its debut next month
Saab has released the first official details of its new 9-5 range, including specs for a 300hp 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 flagship model.
The 2.8T gets a slightly lower-powered version of the 325hp 24-valver fitted to the Vauxhall Insignia VXR - the two GM-developed cars share much of their underpinnings - coupled to XWD four-wheel drive and a six-speed transmission. According to the official figures, the top-end Saab 9-5 will reach 62mph in 6.9secs and a maximum of 155mph. Other engines in the launch line-up are four cylinders; there's a 220hp 2.0T BioPower, a 180hp 2.0 TiD, and a 180hp 1.6T.
Improvements are promised in all areas
Saab's press release makes much of the new model's 'high-tech' features, which will include an aircraft-inspired head-up information display (HUD); adaptive headlights (Bi-Xenon Smart Beam); adaptive cruise control; Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis with real-time damping control; keyless entry and starting; dual-zone climate control; dynamic parking assistance, and Saab XWD with eLSD: the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system. (They claim.)
The new 9-5 is also aiming to appeal to drivers who fancy a bit of Swedish glamour, with 'forward-looking design that doesn't ignore where it's coming from', according to Simon Padian, Saab Brand Design Chief.
Qualities include class-leading rear space
"We are giving a fresh, very modern expression to some of our classic brand design cues with visual themes found in our recent concept cars, such as the Aero X, which are inspired by Scandinavian design and our brand's aircraft heritage," he reckons.
Inside the cabin, legroom and shoulder width are increased both front and rear, and in fact the new 9-5 claims class-leading rear legroom. The choice of materials, the fit and finish and the tactile quality of the controls all reflect the new 9-5's premium character, says Saab.
The new Saab will get it's first public outing at Frankfurt next month.
