If the makers of the forthcoming film Tron Legacy - sequel to the 1982 classic - decide to use cars instead of bikes, they could do a hell of a lot worse than this eco-sci-fi techno fest from Audi.
It's called the E-Tron concept, and Audi has just taken the wraps off it at this year's Frankfurt show. Visually it's little more than an R8 with some very tasty multi-spoke alloys and some sci-fi tweaks to the styling, but underneath things get rather more interesting.
Where the R8's V8 or V10 powerplant ought to be, there's a liquid-cooled 53kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Motive power, meanwhile, comes from a quartet of electric motors, two mounted on the front axle and two on the rear.
The four electric motors drive all four wheels (it wouldn't be a performance Audi without all-wheel drive would it?), mustering a fairly average 309bhp. Torque is a little more spectacular, however - there's 3319lb ft of the stuff.
Despite the complexity and 470kg of battery, the whole car weighs in at an R8 Spyder-beating 1600kg. Audi claims a sprint to 62mph takes 4.8secs, while mid-range shove should be breathtaking - with 37-75 mph achieved in just 4.1secs. The E-Tron's range is also an almost-respectable 250km (155 miles).
Audi admits that it's quite a way from producing economically viable electric vehicles, so Tesla's hegemony on sporty electric cars is intact for now, but the E-Tron is at least a promising statement of intent.
