The dramatic Cadillac Converj coupe concept has been given the green light for production by General Motors.
According The Detroit News, the range-extender petrol-electric hybrid - which was first shown at the 2009 Detroit motor show - will hit show rooms, but not for several years.
Instead, GM will concentrate first on getting the smaller Chevrolet Volt and Vauxhall/Opel Ampera models to market - as the Converj will share much of its smaller siblings' technology - and these are due in late 2010, early 2011.
The higher margins that Cadillac's premium positioning will afford the Converj help the Cadillac make financial sense as it would spread the cost of the expensive lithium ion technology - GM has already spent more than $1bn USD on the Chevrolet Volt programme.
General Motors has not yet made an official statement concerning the future of the Converj, but the car is unlikely to make it to the UK even if it does make it to production.
