The much-hyped Devon GTX project has been cancelled, partly as a result of Chrysler's plan to discontinue the current Dodge Viper on which the only two prototypes were based.
Although the new Viper expected in 2011 seems likely to share much of the current model's chassis, Devon Motorworks has taken the opportunity to duck out of its commitment to begin producing the $500k car it had boldly suggested would establish the US as a key player in the supercar market.
Devon's original plan included an attempt this year on the Radical SR8's production car lap record at the Nurburgring, following a production lap record set at Laguna Seca in 2009. The latest news of the company's decision to scrap the project altogether illustrates the axiom that 'talk is cheap', although we can't help feeling a twinge of disappointment as the GTX might have been an intriguing addition to the bespoke luxury sector.
"The Viper platform being discontinued and the inability to amortize tooling costs are the key reasons," explains Devon's statement. "But we have two beautiful prototypes and might still race the Laguna Seca car with Justin Bell in GT2."
You'll doubtless be pleased to know the Devon brand plans have expanded to include jeans, leather jackets, watches, scents, and eyewear, however.
"Our Beverly Hills flagship store will open this April, and the black and chrome GTX will be in the store as a display piece of automotive art," the company says.
