Some of the wackier vehicles on display at the Detroit show this year include entrants to the X Prize - which we think is a $10m competition designed to attract entrants who can top 100mpg in a road race next year.
Judging by some of the entrants lining up on the X Prize stand, the race could end up looking a bit like an episode of Wacky Races itself.
Our favourites include this Factory Five '65 Daytona Coupe replica powered by a set of DeWalt powertool batteries purchased on eBay, which the entrants claim has already topped 140mph in testing.
Other oddities include the lithium-ion battery powered Alias tricycle three-seater, complete with its Judge Dredd style rear tyre. The makers boast of an 85mph top speed for that, and also reckon they'll be able to sell a few at $35k.
Looking a little like the stillborn Strathcarron, the Carbon-Zero Roadster from SABA Motors could be a more tempting proposition. SABA claims 0-60mph in 5secs and a 105mph top speed, and says it will be available late in 2010.
With that $10m pot up for grabs, maybe PH should be considering an X Prize entry. Anyone got an old Kenwood mixer and a kit car going spare?
