There's only one story for Saab fans this week, and to celebrate the company's takeover by Spyker we present this great shot Stig Blomqvist on the Swedish rally at the wheel of the 99 Turbo rally car as Pic Of The Week.
The (real) Stig's triumph there in 1979 was matched that same year by a win in the British Mintex International Rally, a victory that helped lay the foundations for the enthusiastic following turbocharged Saab road cars were to develop here in the following decades.
The 99 Turbo Rally car was first introduced in 1978, but didn't win a World Rally until Stig clinched the Swedish event. In fact it was the first ever World Rally won by a turbocharged car, which says a lot about the company's forward-looking ethos at the time.
So will Saab ever lead the industry again? Who knows, but it's a thought that gives this old sentimentalist a warm fuzzy feeling - a bit like our POTW, which is showing its age too. Let's call it 'period charm'...
