Hunting for this week's SOTW I skipped over the usual barges (of which there seem to be plenty at the moment), stopped to ponder over a SAAB 900 Turbo, and a Ford Puma 1.7 and then found this, a 1989 Scirocco Scala.
Although not as pretty as the Mk1 'Rocco, the Mk2 is still a compact and pretty car when compared to the modern equivalent, and finished in '2010 comeback' white it still looks modern and perfectly acceptable as a daily driver. Thus it is a worthy winner of this week's SOTW title.
Wracking our brains for some long-ago stored information on the VW coupe, we realised that while it's a car we all know, it is not one that many of us can recall in detail. Sure it was a fairly common sight on the roads not so long ago, but its ability to be forgotten and relative anonimity (away from the VW enthusiasts) means that bargains can still be found.
This particular Scala was registered in 1989, right on the cusp of the cross-over from carbs to fuel injection, but as the seller is keen to call this a Scirocco 'I' we shall assume that this has the 1781cc, 129bhp engine fitted making it all the more desirable. Parts are not an issue these days either, with most being shared with the still popular Golfs of the time, and despite the Mk2 being less nimble and more weighty than its predecessor it can still hold its own with a sub 10-second time to 60 and a top speed in excess of 115mph.
We rather like the whiteness of this car, and believe it or not this is how the car looked as it left the showroom with white wheels, mirrors, skirts, seats and even rear lights. Somehow (in our opinion) what should look crass actually looks fantastic, and is very 'in-period' for the late 80's/ early 90's which almost makes it fashionable today. But here at PH we are far from being fashionistas and simply like good looking, cheap cars that could cut it at a PH meet, yet cost no more than a grand. This VW has style in spades, has useable day to day space and almost classic status. With a long MOT and only 118,000 miles (it's a VW remember) it makes a very tempting shed proposition indeed, but I don't expect everyone to agree....
