It's one that ought to go straight into the file marked 'dream on', but this Ariel Atom-chasing track car is allegedly headed for production.
It is called the P1, and is to be made by an Argentinian outfit called Donto Motors. Now, Argentina is hardly known as a hotbed of sports car engineering talent, but then you wouldn't exactly expect something as insanely wonderful as the Ariel Atom to come out of a sleepy part of Somerset, would you?
So, assuming it will happen, what can we expect from Donto? Well, the P1 apparently weighs 700kg and delivers 180bhp from its mid-mounted 1.8-litre turbocharged Audi motor, so we can expect a fair bit of pace.
We can also expect a modicum of weather protection that neither the KTM nor Atom offer, as the images appear to show a removable hard top. Meanwhile, the translucent body sits on an FIA-okayed chassis, and is supposed to look as if it is 'floating'.
Design-wise, there's a distinct whiff of Audi around the nose, but Lucas Lopez, the creator of the P1's lines, claims no inspiration was drawn from any other manufacturer.
"It's always easy to pull ideas out of the air, drawing a Ferrari, Porsche or Lamborghini, and then make a number of changes to make it different," says Lopez. "And that is what we wanted to keep away from. Putting aside personal preferences, and design with the mind as a blank sheet is not at all easy, in fact, it is extremely difficult."
Should the P1 ever morph into a reality, the company says it wants to sell them at $55k US a piece, but whether there are any plans to import the car to Europe is unknown.
