Porsche is going ahead with its oft-rumoured junior SUV, to be based on Audi Q5 underpinnings and badged the Cajun.
The news emerged officially from a meeting of the firm's supervisory board yesterday, and it's expected the new model will be on sale by 2014.
"Under the working name Cajun, this efficient and sporty model will further expand the company's most successful segment worldwide. In addition to the new Cayenne, which has clearly consolidated its market position as the most successful sporty SUV in the premium segment, the Cajun will also make a positive impact, offering typical Porsche features such as lightweight construction, dynamic handling and agility," runs the company statement.
...and a little bit of that.
"As a desirable entry model in the Porsche world, the Cajun will attract new and even younger customers to the premium brand along with the Boxster, the market leader in the segment of two-seater, mid-size sports cars," the firm reckons.
Doubtless the newcomer will sell like hot cakes, and if that helps Porsche spend money on proper cars we're not going to grumble. As long as nobody in the marketing department asks us to believe the move runs true to the spirit of the Porsche brand's heritage, that is...
