This is the all-but-inevitable AMG version of the new C-class coupe (although we most definitely mean that in a good way), which is due to make its in-the-metal debut at the New York motor show next month.
There had been whispers that the new car would get a non-turbo version of the new 5.5-litre twin-turbo AMG V8 unit (as seen in the CLS63 AMG), but it seems that the 6208cc naturally aspirated V8 gets another new installation - and a stay of execution for now.
As a result the new C63 AMG coupe gets 451bhp (or 481bhp with the optional AMG Development pack) and 442lb ft of torque - in other words the same as the saloon and coupe C63 AMGs.
That'll be enough to push the new Merc to 62mph from rest in 4.4secs and on to the ubiquitous electronically limited 155mph top speed (which is upped to 4.3secs and 174mph for the Development pack version).
Power goes to the rear wheels via the AMG-specific SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed transmission, which features a wet start-up clutch in place of the traditional torque converter, helping to reduce power losses and improve fuel consumption.
The most obvious evidence for this is the rotary control for selecting the C, S, S+ and M transmission modes (and RACE START launch control) situated on the centre console.
Inevitably, AMG has also stiffened the suspension, widened the tracks, sharpened the steering up, and bolted on bigger wheels and tyres, while the interior has also received the usual sporty AMG upgrade.
