The most extreme Mercedes C-class ever, the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series, has made its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show.
Based on the ‘regular’ C63 AMG coupe (itself no slouch), the Black Series version makes 510bhp and 457lb ft (59bhp and 15lb ft more than the C63), enough for it to sprint to 62mph in 4.2secs. The 6208cc V8 is essentially the same as the one in the more humble C63, but uses forged pistons, connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft from the SLS AMG supercar.
The MCT-7 7-speed transmission powers the rear wheels and features a double de-clutch function and a 'Race Start' mode, while the chassis has been specced with coilover suspension, a track that’s 40mm wider at the front and 79mm wider at the rear, and a limited-slip differential.
If you want to get even racier, AMG will sort you out with a 'track pack' . This includes sticky Dunlop tyres, developed specifically for the C63 Black Series, and active rear axle transmission cooling. Another optional extra is an AMG aerodynamics package (pictured), which includes carbon fibre 'flics' on the front apron, an extra front splitter, and an adjustable rear wing.
Mercedes says that it will never make a Black Series car (of which this is the fourth) with four-doors or a convertible roof, so don’t expect a saloon version anytime soon. Merc is even reluctant to do a four-seat Black Series; although the C63 Black can be specified with rear seats, you lose the snazzy front fixed-back buckets in the process.
Sales of the C63 Black Series should begin before the year’s out, priced at around £100k, although Mercedes has not as yet released official specs or pricing.
