Think I can safely say that I’ve never
written about
or taken as much video about car that will never come to the UK.
When in Germany and all that...
Now I’ve had time to think some more about the
BMW M550d
I’m actually a little more confused about its existence. To not be able to sell this car in the UK and the US denies BMW two of its most important markets.
As is often the case, the emergence of this new ‘sub’ brand of M performance seems to shed more light on what it is we expect from the big-daddy M cars. Should this diesel, 4WD saloon and estate carry a real M badge?
Should we actually care? I’m so confused by BMW M these days. This morning I was on its stand at the Geneva motor show swearing under my breath at the white X6 M which still offends me more than flatulence in a crowded lift. Then this afternoon I drove to Chamonix and followed a dark blue X5 M, de-badged and on smaller winter tyres. Why is the former such an affront to M car fans, while the latter I thought looked quite acceptable? Back at Geneva, the 135 M Sport concept thingy looked pretty average too.
As for the ‘special’ destination we chose for the video? I have the sense of humour of an eight-year-old – for which I can only apologise.
