This moderately humble-looking Mustang is Shelby American's most powerful vehicle yet and is to get its public debut at the New York motor show next week. Called the Shelby 1000, and putting out either 950hp, or 1,100hp in track-only guise, it's been created to mark exactly 50 years since Carroll Shelby created an icon by dumping a big Ford V8 into a humble AC.
Taking the new Mustang GT500 as a base (with 650hp already, hardly the most obvious candidate for a power hike), Shelby strips the 5.4-litre V8 block, adds new conrods, crankshaft and pistons, replace the supercharger and uprate the cooling and exhaust systems.
Handling isn't forgotten, with new suspension uprights, anti-roll bars and bushes fitted, while the brakes get four-piston calipers up front and four-piston jobs out back. There are aero mods, too, with a new bonnet, front splitter and rear diffuser among them.
Should you fancy one, Shelby is making a limited production of Shelby 1000s, starting at $149,995. But you'll first have to buy a 'base' GT500 and give it to them as a donor car...
