With a 1,525mm wheelbase, which is 10mm longer than the Quattroporte IV that was current at the time, the 3200 lives up to its GT billing as it can seat four adults in comfort. As standard, leather upholstery is used on all GTs for the seats and dash, with a suede headlining and quality carpets. Some find the front seats unsupportive, so take any car for a lengthy test drive.
The GT's cabin has proved to be durable, helped by most cars not covering large mileages. One fault that has cropped up is the steering wheel's leather stretches and bunches up, which is only cured by fitting a new steering wheel at a cost of £550 as it comes complete with the driver's airbag. A passenger airbag is also standard, along with climate control, electric windows and CD stereo. Check all of these electrical components work smoothly.
Maserati offered customers its Officine Alfieri Maserati programme of personalised options. This opened up a broader palette of exterior and interior colour choices, though the used market prefers more classic, muted combinations.
The Assetto Corsa was offered in Grigio Touring and Grigio Alfieri greys or Rosso Mondiale red. All Assetto Corsa models come with sports pedals that Maserati claimed are more ergonomic. There's also perforated Connolly leather upholstery, and sill cover panels with the 'Assetto Corsa' name on them.
Owner's view
When getting into my Assetto Corsa, the first impression is of the quality of the interior. Everything is leather-covered and the switchgear and indicators have a lovely light, smooth action. Even the sun visors swing down smoothly and drop into place. It gives the impression that a lot of time and effort has been given to getting them right.
