It seems that the modern American muscle car is going from strength to strength. The recent new
SRT Viper
C7 Corvette
are both brimming with more confidence than ever before, as

, and both have followed the successful resurrection of the
Dodge Challenger
Chevrolet Camaro
. And now it seems that another classic name may be about to re-enter the fray: Chevelle.
Chevelle could eventually replace current SS
GM Authority
has discovered that General Motors has applied for the right to the Chevelle trademark. The news, confirmed on the US Patent and Trademark Office’s
website
, suggests that the corporation may have plans to re-introduce the brand to its range. The Chevelle was Chevrolet’s mid-sized offering through the 60s and 70s, and spawned the famed Chevelle SS, one of Chevrolet’s earliest muscle cars. GM’s plans for the name today are as yet unclear, but it seems most likely that a new Chevelle would sit above the Camaro in the GM range, potentially replacing the Holden-based four-door Chevrolet SS when the model falls due for replacement in around three yearstime. The new car would rival Chrysler’s
300 SRT8
, and could feature exaggerated styling that draws upon cues from the classic Chevelle, in much the same way as many modern muscle reincarnations do.
Classic Chevelle was a muscle car hero
Of course, the classic Chevelle is arguably less well-known over here than, say, the Mustang and the Camaro. That’s not to say that they can’t be found, though – check out
this absolute beauty
currently for sale in the PH Classifieds. With a stroker-block 383ci (6.2-litre) V8 that kicks out a stonking 457hp, it’s capable of all the power and fury you could ever want from a classic American muscle car. It’s freshly imported from northern Florida, too, so should be relatively free of rust, and will be sold fully UK registered. At a shade under £14,000 – the price of a couple-of-year-old hot hatch – it seems like pretty good value, too.
