It seems like ages since talk first emerged of Ron Howard's Rush - the dramatisation of 70s F1 that centred around Niki Lauda and James Hunt's rivalry. That's probably because it has been ages, PH's man at the Nurburgring chancing on
the filming of Lauda's crash scene
almost a year ago to the day.
The 'proper' trailer for the film is now doing the rounds too and very ... Hollywood it looks too. It's straight from the movie trailer template so contains moody close ups of the main characters (Hunt played by Chris Hemsworth, Lauda by Daniel Bruhl), tantalising glimpses of a) suitably explosive action sequences b) a hint of rudeness and c) more moody close ups overlaid with people saying stuff like "I've got to beat this guy..."
The whiff of CGI in some of the grid scenes does smack of the BBC's slightly ropey computer enhanced intro graphics for their 2013 F1 coverage but there's also a gritty, mainly rainy, 70s vibe to the whole thing that looks a little more authentic.
Who are we trying to kid? This is a proper mainstream Hollywood film about motorsport in the mould of Grand Prix or Le Mans, though we're guessing it'll be less than half an hour before anyone utters a line of dialogue and it probably won't spend a good portion of the opening sequence with the lead character staring meaningfully at an Armco barrier. More's the pity.
For more info you can see the official site here with the film due on screens in September. And in the meantime watch the trailer.
