The four biggest Japanese car makers have recalled over 3.4 million cars with airbag issues.
The recall, which has been issued by Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda, affects models built after 2000. Airbag and seatbelt manufacturer Takata has admitted that its parts were at fault, and that the problem is caused by a manufacturing defect in the propellant used to inflate the airbag. This may cause the airbag to inflate incorrectly, causing passenger injury, or even a fire. Takata also added that it supplied the affected model of airbag to foreign carmakers, too, prompting suggestions that further recalls could be issued.
In the UK, models affected include 76,000 Toyotas, 60,000 Nissans and 15,400 Hondas, all built between 2000 and 2004. Manufacturers are advising that owners to get in touch with their local dealer if they think their cars have been affected.
