Harris's worst nightmare in four-wheeled form?
It surpasses the previous record of 459 Mazda cars set at Essen in 2010. Again this was using MX-5s, as could be probably be expected. The record was set at the 2013 MAX-5 event at Lelystad, taking in the RDW test centre and local roads.
The day was a jolly celebration of all things Mazda, with demonstrations of a rotary 3 racer and MaX5 Cup car. The MX-5 owners were also invited to test Mazda's new i-Activsense technology and enjoy some racing simulators as well.
Awards were handed out for 'the most beautiful and authentic' MX-5s, with the top three cars from Holland and Belgium. Either very few MX-5s came from further afield (possible) or there was some home advantage at work in the voting (also possible).
Euro MX-5 owners know a good time, clearly
After all this prize-giving, record-breaking fun, around 250 of the MX-5s and their owners stayed to watch Arbitrage in an specially-made drive-in cinema. What fun.
And the MX-5? We've yet to hear any more on the joint Alfa/Mazda project for the current car's replacement and a new Alfa Spider. But given the potential on offer through a collaboration between the two brands, we're eager for further developments.
