Tuesday, 1730h, Ascari Race Resort and some virtual driving
Though it's been a while since playing GT5, today has only reinforced a nagging impression that GT6 feels too familiar.
Following a fairly strict launch itinerary means there's been little chance for individual free time with the game. A few 'party play' sessions with other UK car hacks have revealed fairly simplistic menus, familiar fonts and quite uninteresting icons, compensated by excellent gameplay.
A solo spin on the Goodwood hillclimb challenge revealed Lord March's driveway has been added with sumptuous detail though. The car becomes hard to place as you drive through the overarching trees and trying to thread a car through the stone wall is genuinely exciting. It's a brilliant addition.
A quick note on Ascari too, as many of the game pods allow you only to race here. Driving the track in reality shows just how thorough Yamauchi and his team have been in recreating the circuit; the banked curves that allow you to get back on the throttle have the same effect in the game, and the racing line is near enough identical to the advice of our instructors. That I made the same mistakes on GT and on the circuit probably tells you everything about its realism!
