This time of year is meant to be one of good will and festive cheer, so it's with a heavy heart that we have to report the Brighton Speed Trials may not have a future.
Having run since 1905, the Trials have always brought big crowds to Madeira Drive. Over 200 cars and bikes competed last year, with timed runs throughout the day to find the fastest in a host of categories.
The event is organised by the Brighton and Hove Motor Club (BHMC), but the local Brighton and Hove Council is planning to block permission for the 2014 Trials. The information we have received so far has given no justification behind the decision.
Tony Watts from the BHMC said: "We are appealing to motorsport fans, local residents and everyone who enjoys a family day out at the seaside to help us save this historic event. The loss of the Brighton Speed Trials will be the end of an era for Brighton with over 100 years of history and entertainment in the area gone"
To support this worthy motorsport cause, sign the petition through the Save Brighton Speed Trials website or directly through the council, plus the guys can be found on Facebook and Twitter. A decision is to be made on 23 January which we'll keep you updated on.
