Ah yes, this is what we've been waiting for. The standard
S-Class Coupe
is a rather fetching coupe as is, but the inevitable AMG was the model really on the PH radar. And here it is, all 585hp, 664lb ft and 2,070kg of it.
Where's the badge delete option then?
Much like the previous CL63 AMG (nearly £50K off a barely used one
here
), the S63 AMG coupe takes the hardware of
the saloon
and drops it in the nose of a sleeker two-door. So there's the same 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, seven-speed MCT auto and composite brakes as the saloon enveloped in a rather more attractive body.
The S63 AMG Coupe also introduces yet more tech to the S-Class range with a 'curve tilting function'. Bear with us here. In the words of Mercedes it allows the car to 'lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier'. It reduces lateral acceleration and allows passengers to sit more firmly apparently. Mercedes says the intention is not to reach higher cornering speeds, but to produce 'an even more pleasant motoring experience'. Then sets the upper speed limit for it at 112mph. Hmm...
The full roster of Mercedes safety and chassis tech of course also features, including Magic Body Control, Road Surface Scan and Active Body Control.
The S63 gets the familiar AMG styling cues inside and out to mark it out from your common-or-garden S-Class Coupe. See the V8 Biturbo badges, quad exhausts, forged wheels and 'twin-blade' grille outside and the new seats and wheel inside. Note the latter is a three-spoke item too, so no more grinning wheel as in the saloon.
For now, the four-wheel drive being offered on the S63 saloon doesn't seem to have made it to the coupe. With just the rear wheels taking that monumental power, 62mph arrives in 4.3 seconds and the limited 155mph probably not too long after.
Mercedes will launch the S63 Coupe at New York next month. It will be available in the UK by the end of the year with prices following soon. The CL63 AMG was £118,865 and the new S63 AMG saloon £119,565 so somewhere around £130K seems about right. When's the S65 coming?
