The Evo X was launched in Japan in October 2007 and was the first Evo to offer a dual-clutch auto Sports Shift Transmission (SST), alongside the traditional manual gearbox. An all-new 4B11 aluminium engine replaced the tried-and-test 4G63 unit (employed in all previous Evos) whilst Japanese buyers could choose between a five-speed manual RS version and a more highly-specced GSR - which came with a manual or the twin-clutch SST transmission.
New engine and a new look for Evo X
UK buyers were only offered the GSR - which formed the basis of the UK Evo X FQ models available from March 2008.
The standard spec included Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) which blends the active centre diff, AYC, rear diff, ABS and ASC, 18-inch Enkei alloys, climate control and a 650-watt sound system. But the rear seats didn't split and fold, whilst cruise control, Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity were optional extras. Once again an epic £49,999 limited-edition FQ-400 model was produced in late 2009 with revised engine, suspension and bodywork components.
But this will soon lose its title as the most advanced Evo ever, when it's usurped by Mitsubishi's imminent 40th Anniversary Evo X FQ-440 MR. Priced at £50,000 and claiming 440bhp and 412lb ft of torque it's set to be the ultimate Evolution.
Not a title that should apply to any Evo X according to some Evo enthusiasts though, as Darin Frow points out: "Sure the Evo X is more grown up, but some feel it's lost the Evo edge." And it's not necessarily the best starting point for serious engine tuning either, according to Simon Norris: "The Evo X's 4B11T engine really doesn't have the strength of the earlier iron-block 4G63 and must be treated carefully." Then again, 440hp should prove more than enough for most.
