, both ends of the Porsche four-cylinder desirability scale have been covered recently. But of course they are the warm up acts, the niche installations that very few will experience. It's those engines that will appear in the Boxster and Cayman that are of most interest.
Last 4-cyl Porsche sports car not too bad
Car
has apparently seen the spec of the upcoming turbocharged flat-fours and the vital details are: three different sizes (1.6, 2.0 and 2.5) with power from 213hp to 365hp and all with direct injection. And if the prospect of a turbocharged four-cylinder Porsche sports car has made you spit coffee all over the keyboard, there's at least one saving grace; a manual will be offered.
The larger versions are guaranteed to arrive in the Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne (the latter potentially hybridised) with the future of the 1.6 undecided. So a significant step change for Porsche, but don't forget some of its previous four-cylinder efforts were quite good. There was the 356 and 550 early on, the 912, 914, 944 Turbo and the superb 968 Club Sport as well. Don't be too despondent just yet.
