Launched in late 1993 the
Mercedes C36 AMG
saloon packed a 3,606cc straight-six engine, feeding power to the rear wheels through a fairly rudimentary four-speed automatic transmission. Later 1996 models gained a more responsive five-speed transmission, but even with the original four-speed 'box 284lb ft of torque still helped deliver a 6.7-second 0-60mph time and a 155mph top speed.
Early C36s used a four-speed (!) auto
By modern AMG standards all the car's responses are a tad lethargic - everything's a bit more relaxed - but under pressure it still packs a punch. With just 230 originally sold in the UK however it was always very rare. Now just 118 examples are left on UK roads.
Cries for a V8 model led to the launch of the burlier C43 AMG in 1997. Performance from the 310hp 4,266cc M113 engine (which boasted twin spark plugs and three valves per cylinder) was improved, with 0-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds for the saloon version and 5.9 for the new estate model.
Alongside AMG alloys, skirts and spoilers the C43's luxurious spec list also included retractable rear head restraints, ABS, cruise and traction control, electric heated front seats and mirrors, climate control and an optional sunroof. UK buyers bought 320 saloons and 86 estates.
C43 the first AMG C-Class wagon
The C43 AMG's tweaked five-speed transmission is definitely more responsive than the C36 AMG's, but both models need a degree of ongoing TLC - as the bodywork does rust. Otherwise though, both W202s last well - as Barry at specialists Prestige Performance reiterates: "We don't get any major problems with either of them and these W202 models are starting to become very collectable."
Watch out for expensive service points though: "On the older models there's a four-year/50,000 mile service with fuel filter/diff oil/gearbox oil and filter/air filter and spark plugs all due at the same time."
As the rarer model the C36 AMG currently offers better residual prospects, with a few tatty C43s still holding back values of the later W202.
