New York may not have the cachet of some big motor shows, even amongst the US expos, but it's not been short of interesting cars this week. There's been new cars from Jaguar, Porsche and McLaren to name but three.
Elsewhere we've had a new addition to the PH Fleet and a PH Buying Guide on an AMG legend plus the usual mix of news, reviews and opinions. Catch up with everything here!
There have been two cars dominating the PH interest at New York this week, the
McLaren 570S
Porsche Boxster Spyder
. Both promise to be exemplary, the 570S taking all that's been learnt from the 650S and P1 into a more affordable package, the Porsche building on an incredible original with the Cayman GT4 learning. The Boxster is also another manual-only Porsche, an interesting development given the recent proliferation of automatics. We'll hope to deliver the PH verdict on both very soon.
Also at the show is the new Jaguar XF, a vital car for Jag given the success of the original and the fiercely competitive 5 Series/E-Class/A6 segment. It looks to have improved on the flaws of the first model while retaining its strengths. Once more the proof will be in the driving.
Other highlights include the stunning Subaru STI Performance Concept and the Range Rover SVAutobiography. It would be hard to find many more diverse automotive pairings but both have their merits. Shame only one is available to buy...
Big engine, big car, big fun
The Mercedes C63 AMG is a car that will be remembered as a legend, a fantastically charismatic V8 saloon that was as popular with owners as it was journalists. With the W204 generation now replaced, what better time to buy a used one? The
PH Buying Guide
will provide all the information required to make the best buying decision. It won't do anything about fuel consumption though...
While not as iconic as the AMG, the Nissan 370Z NISMO has a similarly old school, simple approach to providing its thrills. Now revised but fundamentally the same big-hearted sports GT, it is not without talent or appeal. Like the C63, its successor will be downsized in every sense; it will be fascinating to see what Nissan comes up with.
Though of course much of the PH news has been dominated by cars over in America, there has been a couple of other bits to discuss. The first details of what promises to be a superb Goodwood Festival of Speed have been announced and Mercedes has previewed another SUV. Keeping up with the new names?
Time to see what the fuss is about!
As proven by the comments thread, everyone on the Internet does indeed own a
VW Golf R
. So we felt obliged to join in... The response to 'our' Tornado Red five-door has been lively already - expect much more debate over the coming weeks and months. There's also the latest on James's adventures with his
V60 Polestar
when you've had enough Golf R forum debate.
There's been plenty of PHTV content to enjoy this week too. Episode 6 is now available and a few great clips from the PHer member vids have featured as well: see the 700hp Noble, the Aston GT4 and S2000 'ring lap.
What's left? Plenty. Thursday was the day for Italian heroes, with both the Fiat Coupe Turbo and Alfa 156 GTA receiving their time in the spotlight once more. There was also a fast Vauxhall Astra diesel (no, really) found in the classifieds, a Swedish Shed and the fast Subaru you've probably forgotten about in Carpool. More of the same next week!
