It's not just new McLarens and limited-edition Porsches this week! Here's the brief PH rundown of everything else noteworthy at New York 2015.
Subaru STI Performance Concept
If you've been waiting for a more focused BRZ/ GT86 then don't get too excited. This
STI Performance Concept
was basically showing off the tuning prowess of Subaru's go-faster division rather than a new model, or even components that US buyers will be able to get off-the-shelf. The concept had a turbocharged engine from the Super GT racer and various unspecified chassis mods, plus that comically vast rear wing.
Ford Shelby GT350R
The brawniest version of the new Mustang made its debut at the Detroit show in January, but a few more details have now leaked out including the fact it's set to have 'at least' 520hp from what Ford claims will be the most powerful naturally aspirated engine it's ever made. There was also a Focus RS at NYIAS a colour that can only be described as baby blue, which suited it surprisingly well.
Cadillac takes on the S-Class
With Cadillac threatening to make another return to Europe - we've lost count of how many this will be - the new CT6 looks like a potentially timely arrival. It's bigger than the recently launched CTS and is being pitched as a rival to cars like the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8. It's certainly clever, featuring part-aluminium construction and rear-wheel steering, and won't have a V8 option, with the choice of a basic four-cylinder turbo or two V6s.
Mercedes GLE
You're probably still getting used to Merc's new naming conventions, with the GLE being the new title for what used to be the ML. We've already seen the 'coupe' version, but New York let us get close to the taller and blockier standard car in both 350 and - brace yourself - Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S guises, with this boasting the 585hp tune of AMG's 5.5-litre V8 turbo. Likely to top a few 'guilty pleasures' lists.
VW Golf Sportwagen Alltrak
Clear evidence that Volkswagen is using Venn diagrams in its product planning, certainly for the hard-to-conquer U.S. market. This is an off-roadish four-wheel driven Golf estate that seems designed to tick as many boxes as possible in a country where the Subaru Legacy Outback is a major player. In a European context it's basically either a posher alternative to the Skoda Octavia Scout or a downmarket rival to the Audi A4 Allroad.
