This week's pick from the Readers' Cars forum is a lot more than just a car and a little less than a tank. The Daimler Ferret is in fact an armoured scout car. Fitted with a machine gun!
This specific Ferret served in Hong Kong up to 1972, then was shipped out to Kuwait to serve in the first Gulf War in 1991. With no details from between the tours, we can only assume that mechanics just kept the vehicle running with some odd patchwork before retiring it in 1996.
The OP's father purchased it back in 2002 as part of a military collection. 13 years later, father and son started the restoration to get it back on the road. Pulling apart intricate armoured parts that have been in use for over four decades has certainly thrown up a few hurdles along the way. To put things into context, a single wheel weighs 76kg.
Still with a number of repairs to get it on the road, let's hope we see it out and about by the summer months. Congratulations 'LewG,' your Daimler Ferret is our Reader's Car of the Week!
