Think back to last summer just briefly. Pictures emerged of a VW Golf GTI with some fairly aggressive aero and a roll cage
at the Nurburgring
Golf GTI Clubsport
; then the CS was launched towards the end of last year and, lovely car though it was, the final car was not as focused as those first images suggested.
But here is that caged GTI again. What could it be? Our sources are suggesting it's a Clubsport S, and you'll notice a blacked out badge on the sill where the 'S' badge would presumably sit. Otherwise it looks much like a regular Clubsport, with similar aero treatment and 19-inch wheels. Keen eyes will note some additional drilled holes in the front discs, but this doesn't appear a wild 'ring renegade like a
Megane Trophy-R
Power? Again we'll have to guess, but it rather appears that 300hp is a minimum requirement for a front-wheel drive 'ring record car today. That or the Megane style crash diet. With the Leon Cupra up to 290hp now, the Clubsport S might use that and forget the 265hp non-overboost figure of the standard car. Could VW really give this Clubsport more power than the 300hp Golf R?
That's all to be confirmed, but hopefully there's not long to wait. The Worthersee meet takes place in early May, an event where VW has previously revealed very special vehicles. It's where the standard Clubsport was seen last year, and of course also where that utterly insane W12 Golf 650 made its debut too. As and when there's more news, we'll let you know!
