Fast, fun and ... occasionally flimsy. Certain stereotypes about older French hot hatches hold true, as our original poster knows only too well given he's now on his fourth Citroen AX GT. Back in March our OP was on to purchase an AX GT to go with a project which hadn't progressed all that far. A suitable AX was offered for free with one catch. It was in the South of France. A road trip sounded fun but our man wisely picked a company to trailer it over safely.
With just under a quarter of a million miles, this AX was in dire need of some TLC. Front shocks, brakes and a blown exhaust were a priority before trying to get it through the MoT. Digging a little deeper showed some cosmetic damage at the front and the rear but it also threw up some gems, including the original Blaupunkt stereo and rubber floor mats.
With the original AX demoted to a donor car our OP had the opportunity to turn plenty of smaller jobs into bigger ones - greasing the ignition barrel lead to a full refurb of the carburettor for instance. Preparing the car for its MoT, the car looked pretty clean underneath with barely any rust present. A recurring theme in this man's AX GT history is that he paid less than £100 for any of his cars. But in turn he has put many man hours to get them right.
Let's hope to see this epic little AX push towards half a million miles with plenty of updates. Congratulations Kitchski - your Citroen AX GT is our Reader's Car Of The Week.
