Max Power was the magazine that brought the modding scene into UK popular culture. Massive sound systems including 6x9s drilled into the rear parcel shelf and a huge subwoofer to rumble boot floors, chrome, bodykits and neon lights were all required to get yourself noticed. Sure, they cost loads of money and did nothing to the car, but nobody cared then. There were those who fitted more usable modifications too, including door edge bumpers, aftermarket fog lamps and third brake lights. All of these are now standard on most cars, with retractable door edge bumpers fitted as an option on the new Ford Focus RS.
Scenes have changed over the years with people in the 70s hiking up the rear suspension to make the axle visible, louvres across the rear window and quad headlight conversions. Nowadays the scene appears to be towards the rat rod look, and even fitting fake drilled brake discs.
