Having held our first Rally GB Sunday Service in Llandudno last year, a couple of key factors differentiated this occasion from that one; namely that this year's event was on a Friday, and that it only rained a lot, instead of A LOT. It was also held at the Sweetlamb rally complex, allowing spectators a great view of the cars as they hurtled into the valley, over the jumps and through the water splash before accelerating off into the distance. One hundred lucky PHers were given free tickets and the opportunity to join us in watching the rally from one of the best vantage points on Friday's stage. However as the clouds closed in and the heavens opened, spectators of all sorts sought shelter under the trusty PH marquee.
The rain failed to dampen spirits though as newly recrowned WRC champion Sebastien Ogier powered his way to yet another victory, eventually finishing the rally 10.2 seconds ahead of Estonian driver Ott Tanak. The only disappointment in an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable day came when Ireland's Craig Breen was forced to retire after rolling his DS 3 right at the start of the stage. Automotive highlights of the day of course included the seemingly never ending stream of Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts taking part in the National Rally, as well as the unexpected sight and sound of a Chevrolet V8 powered Vauxhall tackling the stage.
A huge thank you to all of the Wales Rally GB staff and marshalls, without whom the event would be unable to take place, and of course to all of the PHers who made the trip! We look forward to seeing you there again next year.
