The battle for in-car supremacy between smart phones running Apple and Android operating systems has taken a new twist since Carplay came to market and Android Auto launched two years ago now. Google's latest move could see the advantage swing its way with a new release allowing Android users running 5.0 or later to pair the Auto app with older cars. 50 brands already offer Android Auto and this will open it up to millions more users.
Gerhard Schobbe, Android Auto's Product Manager, said the update offers a "driver friendly interface to access the key stuff you need on the road", whether it is connected to a car display or simply mounted to the dashboard. The update allows for the app to be started as soon as the phone is paired to the car via Bluetooth or launched manually, whilst Google Assistant is the manufacturer's solution to using the phone hands-free across a user's day-to-day life.
Unfortunately for some, if the phone isn't paired to a car running Android Auto, all commands will have to go through the phone. And given the recent focus on handheld phone usage the onus will be on all drivers to make sure they're interacting safely and legally with their phones. That aside it's good news and increases the options for staying connected on the move.
