Afghanistan is not a country on most people's travel lists. Turmoil in the country has stopped even the most seasoned traveller from experiencing the vast beauty the country has to offer. The Salang Pass snakes through the Hindu Kush, which is a mountain range in central Afghanistan and Northern Pakistan. 'A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush' was Eric Newby's 1958 book but, unlike Newby, our original poster Strela is taking a short drive in the Hindu Kush. He is heading north from Kabul, through the Salang tunnel between the Parwan and Baghlan provinces of Afghanistan using four wheels instead of two feet.
The roads look to be in serious disrepair and Strela admits that he wouldn't normally go by road but it provides a new perspective to those who normally fly over. Strela talks about a few other instances that make this thread even more enticing and there are plenty of photos.
