Mini GP2
"I test drove one a couple of years ago and really loved it. A great driver's car that is surprisingly practical, assuming you don't have many friends! Ticks the FWD box and I think could be my ideal daily runaround, but one that also comes alive on a B-road blast when the mood takes. This example is well specced and well priced compared to others, plus it seems to have been enthusiast owned - usually a plus in my experience."
Land Rover Defender 110
Cost: £18,500
Balance: £64,600
Why I chose it: "When I was a child my family had a Series 3 Lightweight Land Rover in full camo paint and used to get taken out on off-road days and weekends. I loved everything about it and I have very fond memories of that car. This more modern LWB 110 would be perfect for towing, dog carrying, tip runs and extended family outings. It looks to be a well-appointed and low mileage example with a few added extras, such as the snorkel, which I do like the look of. A proper piece of British history! While it's certainly not the most civilised of vehicles, it can't help but make you smile."
Caterham R500 Superlight
Cost: £28,500
Balance: £36,100
Why I chose it: "There is simply nothing like the sensation of driving a Seven and I don't think my garage could be without one. It's such a visceral vehicle to be in, all of your senses are assaulted and it's a very physical experience. This car is a famous R500 that looks to be in fantastic condition. A K-Series engine at full chat is a great thing and, combined with the sequential 'box, this would make a fantastic track day car. The yellow suits it perfectly and looks to be the pick of the bunch on sale for me."
BMW 730d
"Long road trips would be eaten up in this thing - a great way to travel. Trips to Le Mans with a couple of mates could be taken in comfort with no fuss at all. This example is a good looking variant. It's well specced and, while it does have a few miles, it's nothing excessive with a good history. It's got all of the toys imaginable and seems a bit of a bargain to me!"
Vauxhall VX220 Turbo
Cost: £14,995
Balance: £5,355
Why I chose it: "I've had two of these cars previously and I really think they are fantastic. In my opinion a great design coupled to a wonderful Lotus designed chassis. This car looks to be very original and in great shape. I had one in this very spec and I still think it's great looking today. Prices are definitely starting to rise and original cars are the most desirable. For a sunny day B-road blast this would be hard to beat!"
Triumph Daytona 675
Cost: £4,695
Balance: £665
Why I chose it: I can't ride a bike but I'd like to learn and this is a great looking thing. The 'Triple' has a very unique sound and I like that is a bit different from the usual Japanese selection. The remaining £665 should be just enough to put me through my bike test with a few lessons I'd have thought!"
