Five days after winning his first Formula 1 World Championship, Nico Rosberg has announced his retirement from the sport. The announcement was made at the FIA press conference in Vienna, ahead of the awards ceremony tonight.
On Rosberg's Facebook page he states that his dream in 25 years of racing was to become Formula One World Champion. "I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right." He says that the decision was made the day after clinching the title from three-time World Champion and team mate Lewis Hamilton in Abu Dhabi five days ago.
With the shock retirement from the sport, it leaves Mercedes F1 with an empty seat to fill ahead of the new race season. Could we see the German team looking at poaching the likes of a youngster like Verstappen, or someone with more experience and Championships to their name?
More details when we have it.
Unsurprisingly PHers are already discussing Rosberg's departure; join the discussion here.
