Volvo's history in touring cars is a well known one, what with the legendary
BTCC campaign
V8 Supercars presence
and a return to World Touring Cars recently. What's perhaps less well documented is its racing truck programme. And, well, you probably should be aware of it.
'The Iron Knight' is its latest creation, boasting 2,400hp, a 4.6-second 0-62mph time and a top speed in excess of 170mph. Well, it hit 171.5mph in some record attempt runs this year. And it runs the same dual-clutch a Volvo's production trucks. Nifty.
Here it takes on Volvo's S60 Polestar WTCC racer, the touring car packing just a measly 1.6-litre engine (compared to the 12.8-litre six-cylinder in the lorry) and 400hp. But then it will be considerably lighter.
So here's the test: a quarter-mile drag race, followed by a circuit battle at Mantorp Park. Well, a slightly skewed circuit battle, but it still looks rather good fun. If you ever need a spare truck racer Volvo...
