There can't be many who find the
AMG GT R
lacking on circuit. With 585hp, a nine-way motorsport-inspired traction control system, four-wheel steer and that incredible
Nordschleife lap
behind it, the R is certainly not without track credentials. But now AMG is said to be working on an even more focused version...
In an interview with Auto Express, AMG boss Tobias Moers suggested that a version "for fun on circuits" was being created - "race track orientated" was another intriguing phrase used. The name 'Clubsport' is a term Moers himself came up with in the interview, to emphasise that this new GT would not be a competition car for the road.
Perhaps the most interesting development from Moers was his admission that the 'Clubsport' - or whatever it ends up being called - will be lighter than the GT R. It's interesting because, despite all its many positives, the GT R is far from slender: 1,630kg with a driver is 125kg more than a
PDK 911 GT3
, which is a lot. It's that 911 which nobody ever shuts up about that has spurred on the Clubsport model by the sounds of it too, Moers noting the price difference (at point of sale) between a GT3 and a GT3 RS; a GT R is between them at the moment, implying that a potential Clubsport would be pitched above an RS.
However, this is all just conjecture for now. There's nothing official from Mercedes, the comments from Moers were in an interview and not an official press presentation and, let's face it, AMG seems to be keeping busy enough at the moment. Wouldn't it be incredible if it could happen though? Maybe using the E63 version of the 'hot-V' V8, with some more carbon to save weight, another mad new colour... It's very easy to get ahead of yourself, see? Hopefully this is one to update in the future, but for now don't forget there are plenty of plain Jane GT Rs available secondhand...
