Following
an initiative in Holland, Wiltshire County Council are removing signage from
roads in a safety experiment.
Rather than plaster the centre of the road with cross hatching and red
tarmac, they're not painting the road at all. The lack of a centre line is
intended to increase the degree of 'uncertainty' experienced by users of the
road and make them more cautious as a result.
The experiment is limited to five roads at present.
Typically, there's been a knee jerk reaction by some before waiting to see
the results, with one local councillor branding it as 'Total madness' and
claiming that it's a cost cutting exercise.
