Crail Airfield is set for its busiest event of the summer, with thousands of spectators expected to watch the country’s fastest cars battle it out for the title of Scotland’s most powerful road car 2003, as part of Ultimate Scottish Streetcar (USSC) on Sunday, 17th August.
This is only the second year that the Fife based, Crail Airfield, has run the USSC event, which saw around 5000 people in 2002 watch the overall winner – the 1000 break horse power, Japanese Skyline Jun – power up the ¼ mile in just 10 seconds.
Spectators will also be able to see a second attempt at the Scottish Land Speed Record, by the 10,000hp, jet powered, saloon bodied car, Fireforce 2, which can deliver speeds of over 270mph. Due to bad weather, the jet machine’s previous attempt in June, only managed to reach 174 mph, but still achieved a Scottish record, with a time of 7.8 seconds over the 1/4 mile.
In addition there will be a special appearance from a mighty American, 56 Chevy, from Cumbernauld, which has pulled in a blistering 8.876 seconds on the ¼ mile at a speed of 160.5 mph at Santapod Raceway, south of the border.
The format for USSC 2003, will see vehicles in each of the three classes - front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and 4-wheel drive - battle it out till 4pm to reach the top six. At 5.30pm there will be the eliminator stage to decide the winner of each class. The three winners will then fight it out for the ultimate, overall prize of USSC 2003.
For those that don’t have 1000 bhp vehicles, there will be a trophy and £100 prize for the most consistent reaction time of the day - the quickest car to 60 feet - as well as for the car that reaches the highest terminal speed at the end of the 1/4 mile. All cars entering this event on the 1/4 mile must be road legal.
Also appearing will be the Dutch jet quad, Pyromaniac, which returns to Crail for the second time. Developed in Holland it is driven by a Rolls Royce jet engine equipped with an afterburner.
The only requirement to take part at Crail is a valid UK driving licence, £10 for admission and a £15 signing-on fee, which entitles participants to unlimited runs. At the end of the day personal performance print-outs showing reaction times to the start lights, 60', 1/4 mile times, and top speed will be given out – personal times can also be easily accessed through www.crailraceway.co.uk
