Premiership footie players are renowned for driving the most expensive cars -- several of Manchester United's stars have treated themselves to the new £110,000 Bentley Continental GT. Even a member of the second team managed to afford one.
But what about the other end of the scale? At Morecambe FC, aka the Shrimps, the manager and assistant manager apparently drive Rover 75s, while the captain Jim Bentley pilots a Ford Mondeo Zetec Sport TDCi.
Midfielder Terry McFlynn sits at the wheel of a Renault Clio 1.2 -- he used to drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee but the insurance for a pro footballer came to £4,700 -- yes Morecambe FC with its diminutive 6,400 capacity ground may have made a loss of £180,000 on income of £800,000 but, as far as the insurance companies are concerned, the risks are the same.
Compared to major league teams, the financials for players couldn't be more different. Where some of those at the top earn deep into six figures, at Morecambe's level, most earn between £20,000 and £40,000 -- per year, not per week.
However, according to a report in the Motoring Telegraph, the aspirations are the same. Asked what he would buy if he were earning a Premiere League salary, captain Jim Bentley said he's buy a Bentley turbo convertible. And an Aston and a BMW X5. His co-players made similar choices.
However, it has to be said that Morecambe's players themselves don't reckon their chances of achieving that level of income. Goalkeeper Adam Sollitt is reported as saying that the club would have to win the FA Cup and the Champions' League.
For the benefit of the non-football followers among us, that's a pretty tall order.
