Autocar reports this week on early sightings of the new Porsche 911 Turbo (997), which, like the outgoing 996 model (right), will be offered in both cabriolet and coupé format. It's said to offer some 460 bhp, which goes a fair way towards challenge rivals such as the 425 bhp Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale.
Endowing the beast with an additional 40 bhp over the 996 are larger turbochargers, more efficient intercoolers and revised engine management electronics, according to the Autocar report. Torque increases to 460 lb-ft which is enough to push the iconic machine to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the current model.
Top speed rises too, and will be higher than the 996's 191 mph, partly as a result of better aerodynamics under the body and a more efficient bi-plane wing. But much of the increase is the result of a new 4WD system, using electronically controlled differentials to allocate power to the wheel with the greatest grip.
You can choose your transmission too, either a short-stick manual, reworked from the current model, or a dual-clutch semi-auto system similar to the VW DSG, managed with shift paddles behind the steering wheel. From your reporter's experience with VW's DSG and its millisecond-quick gear changes, this will be the one to go for.
Other features will include ceramic carbon brakes, 19-inch wheels, active suspension management. Styling cues consist of bigger cooling ducts, wider wheelarches and of course the whale tail.
Prices will be close to the 996's £90,000 and it goes on sale this time next year.
