Toniq offers test drives

Toniq-R DVD now also available

Toniq, the company founded by two design students who decided to build their own sports/track car, has announced that test drives will be available in May. This follows a stripping down of the test car, and the fitting of a roll cage and new petrol tank.

The fibreglass-bodied Toniq-R features a powder coated, spaceframe steel chassis and is powered by a Suzuki Hayabusa liquid cooled four-cylinder 16V 1.3-litre bike engine. It develops 178bhp at 9,800rpm and 102lb-ft at 7,000rpm and weighs 495Kg, so you get 360bhp per tonne and performance said to be 3.5 seconds for the 0-60mph dash, with a top speed of 140+ mph.

Transmission to the rear wheels consists of a six-speed sequential manual 'box mated to 17-inch x 6-inch Momo Quazar II wheels wrapped in Avon ZZ3 205/45 ZR17 road tyres. Brakes are Brembo four-pots.

It costs £4,000 in basic kit form or £16,000 factory built -- with student discounts available.

In summer, the team plans to take the car back to the University of Huddersfield, its makers' alma mata.

DVD available

In the meantime, Toniq has made available a limited edition DVD. With it, you can now watch the development of the first ever student car-design project to make it through to a production reality from the comfort of your own home. The DVD features a documentary on the history of the Toniq-R, first shown on the Channel 4 series, “Engineering at the Cutting Edge” which was broadcast on Tuesday 16th November 2004.

The footage includes Colin Williams and Will Baxter driving the car that they designed for the 1st time, followed by champagne celebrations. The documentary goes on to illustrate some of the engineering challenges faced by the team, including fitting the carburettors under the bonnet. The menu-page also includes the performance and specifications data along with listing the contents of the basic kit package.
