When the need for a new commuter car first appears, going for a new lease or PCP deal will normally get the newest car hassle-free for not much cash. But if man maths and scouring the PH classifieds is what you do to keep yourself sane, something special could be picked up. BlownImp, a PHer after something a little more luxurious that his ST220 Mondeo for his 30-mile daily commute, found himself looking for a big BMW.
Clearly quirky styling wasn't an issue having owned three Citroen XMs and a Celica ST205, so BlownImp turned his thoughts to the E65 BMW 7 Series with 'the bustle back and shaped front lights'. When his uncle's 760Li came up for sale, he jumped at the opportunity to run a V12. Averaging 21mpg on his commute, he is astonished by the level of comfort and waftability the 7 Series offers. New filters for the engine, cabin and transmission were replaced as was the gearbox oil. The power steering fluid was also changed to try to keep the gremlins at bay. After 400 miles on a battery with not much juice left, the big 7 threw its toys out of the pram and recorded 500 separate faults (!). New battery fitted and faults cleared, the car ran well.
Then the cold weather set in! New fault codes were appearing and a misfire occurred on cold starts. Without his trusted fault code reader, the 7 would have spent plenty of hours in the garage running diagnostics. Find out more in the full thread below
Congratulations BlownImp, bargetastic BMW 760Li is our Reader's Car of the Week. Read the full thread here.
