As soon as a concept car is revealed it is studied like a fine specimen and pulled apart to figure out what will actually make the production version. When the Fisker Karma was shown to the world in 2008 people swooned over the thought of plug-in hybrid technology, solar panels and a 'green' interior. After a few years of delays, Fisker released the Karma to the public with all the elements seen on the concept.
Headed up by Henrik Fisker - back catalogue including BMW Z8, various Aston Martins and more - the Karma was constructed at Valmet Automotive that also built Saabs and - until 2011 - Porsche Boxsters and Caymans. Looking good so far.
Built on an aluminium spaceframe it has a 264hp four-cylinder engine up front powering the generator, which in turn powers the twin AC motors on the rear axle. At 2.4 tonnes it's not as light as the swoopy looks might suggest. On start-up, it wafts in silence and only when the 20kWh battery pack needs charging does the engine lend its combustive power. Intuitive solar panelling on the roof powers the climate control avoiding draining the batteries.
The eco-friendly interior was benchmarked against the Porsche Panamera, resulting in a low seating position. Salvaged timber and 'distressed' leather rejected by other manufacturers added to the 'living' element our featured car is supplied with.
At a time when hybrid cars weren't swarming the capital, the Karma included a nifty sound generator known as 'Tron' to alert pedestrians of its approach. With only 2,450 ever produced and none were sold in the UK, you will be very unlucky to come across another one down the high street. This is a European LHD model with only 12,000 miles, capable of hitting the 60mph mark in 5.9 seconds. Unfortunately fires, recalls and lawsuits plagued the Karma and it ceased production not long after that.
But it did break the stereotype of hybrids being worthy and boring, bringing some welcome glamour and flamboyance to the trend for going green. From hybrid hypercars to the incredible success of Tesla's increasingly rapid electric cars the Karma blazed an early trail for exciting and glamorous electrically powered cars. And it still looks good. Are you brave enough to take the plunge?
